FE fundinfo reveals 2025 Alpha Managers
Sustainable funds gain ground with more ESG Managers awarded Alpha Manager status for the first time.
FE fundinfo, a leading financial data company connecting the asset management industry to distribution networks in the UK, Europe and Asia Pacific, today announced its 2025 Alpha Managers, with 42 fund managers receiving the Alpha Manager Rating for the first time.
Once a year the Alpha Manager Ratings honour the top 10 per cent of UK retail-facing managers based on their ability to create risk-adjusted alpha, outperformance in both rising and falling markets, and those who consistently beat their benchmarks. In total, 199 managers have been awarded an Alpha Manager Rating in 2025, with 56 new fund managers joining the list after missing out in 2024.
New entrants
New entrants receiving the Alpha Manager status for the first time include Raheel Altaf of Artemis, who manages the Artemis SmartGARP Global Emerging Markets Equity Fund, Rory Powe of MAN Group, who mainly manages the MAN GLG Continental European Growth fund (alongside the RI Sustainable fund and the RI Global Sustainable Growth Alternative Fund), and Vivek Taneeru of Matthews, who manages Matthews Asia Sustainable Future.
Charles Younes, Deputy Chief Investment Officer, FE fundinfo, said:
“The Alpha Manager Rating provides a clear measure of a fund manager’s ability to consistently deliver returns across several market cycles. Unlike short-term performance metrics, it reflects a manager’s entire career track record, marking out those with the expertise to navigate market shifts over the long-term.
“This year’s new entries are no different: among them, Raheel Altaf and Rory Powe stand out as exceptional performers. Raheel’s disciplined quantitative approach has been a key driver of success for his fund, while Rory’s fund, despite periods of underperformance, has ultimately delivered stronger returns over the long-term in comparison to many of his peers at other European equity funds.
Sustainable and ESG fund performance
Notable among this year’s new entrants was the growing presence of sustainable and ESG-focused funds. Previously, these funds have struggled to reach Alpha Manager status due to their relatively short track records. However, as many reach the 7-10 year mark, their managers are beginning to demonstrate the consistency required for the Alpha Manager ranking.
In addition to Rory Powe and Vivek Taneeru, other sustainable fund managers who were ranked as Alpha this year include Scott MacLennan of Schroders, who manages the Schroder Sustainable Global Growth and Income Fund, and Andrew Hill of Invesco, who manages the Invesco Sustainable Global Income Fund.
Longevity
Among the fresh and returning names in the list this year, several Alpha Managers remain as consistent high performers.
As of 2025, 19 Alpha Managers have now each received the rating for 10 consecutive years. These managers include Mark Slater (Slater Investments), Richard Woolnough (M&G), James Thomson (Rathbone), Nick Train (Lindsell Train), Alex Wright (Fidelity), Alex Grispos (Ruffer LLP), Barry Norris (Argonaut), David Gait (Stewart Investors), Sebastian Lyon (Troy) and Ezra Sun (Veritas).
Groups
There was considerable movement in the Groups this year, with PIMCO knocking Fidelity off the top spot. JP Morgan, which previously held second place, fell away this year, while MAN Group and Schroders each secured five Alpha Managers to share second place.
Behind the leading groups, the chasing pack was made up of M&G, T.Rowe and Wellington with four Alpha Managers each.
